“Lying in bed,” noted literary giant G.K. Chesterton, “would be an altogether perfect and supreme experience if only one had a coloured pencil long enough to draw on the ceiling.” Sometimes I feel the same way. Above my bed is a pure white canvas waiting to become what it surely was created to be: something spectacular and beautiful. Sadly, for reasons far beyond my control, my ceiling will never be a twenty-first century Sistine Chapel.

Chesterton was a master of wit, taking simple, everyday things, turning them on their head to communicate with clarity and insight. As he looked about his room while in bed, he noticed his wallpaper was different than his vision for his ceiling. Instead of an iconic storyboard covering the drywall, he saw a decorative apparatus full of “arbitrary symbol (a symbol entirely devoid of any religious or philosophical significance)…sprinkled all over my nice walls like a sort of small-pox.” For Chesterton, wallpaper was “vain repetition” – like pointless mutterings repeated incessantly.

No matter one’s opinion of wallpaper or decorative ceiling art, that we are always communicating something – even with our wallpaper – is inescapable. And sometimes we only get one opportunity to communicate it. Each word is crucial.
